New Art Exhibit at the Peace Center New Multimedia Exhibit on Environmental Justice, Contamination and Nuclearism in New Mexico.

The new exhibit in the Peace Hall contains work by students in the UNM Sustainability Studies Program creatively exploring issues of contamination and environmental injustice through multiple art forms. Students in SUST 334: Local and Global Environmental Justice and SUST 402: Nuclear New Mexico (taught by Eileen Shaughnessy) confront the legacies of the Cold War and decades of militarism and nuclear weapons and energy production here in New Mexico and beyond. The courses focus in particular on the devastating impact these industries have wrought on Indigenous peoples via environmental racism. The students have utilized art as a vehicle for social change with the intention of sparking conversation, education, and action.
